Dirty Hits Stories 20032013 edition by Tony O'Neill Literature Fiction eBooks

From the author of SICK CITY, BLACK NEON and DOWN AND OUT ON MURDER MILE comes a collection of stories previously available only in long out-of-print literary magazines and fanzines. Written over the past decade the stories in DIRTY HITS veer between the junkie-memoir ("Boiling Blood", "A Successful Morning"), character studies of those on the fringes of LA's drug culture ("Frank the Dog Walker", "A Conversation in Laughlin, NV"), bizarre fantasy ("Beautiful Head", "Roach Killer") and the utterly unclassifiable ("A Most Dangerous Profession"). Collected together as a low-cost e-book for the first time, DIRTY HITS offers the uninitiated a chance to discover the twisted world of Tony O'Neill, a writer who the Guardian claimed had "taken the term rock'n'roll poet to it's farthest edges" and whose novels have been described as "exquisite" by Irvine Welsh and as resembling "a Robert Altman film scripted by Charles Bukowski and William S. Burroughs …" by Booklist.
Dirty Hits Stories 20032013 edition by Tony O'Neill Literature Fiction eBooks
I love Tony O'Neill's work. There are 10,000 writers out there who are writing drug memoirs or novels, but O'Neill is one of the few who is actual a true writer. His prose is elegant and restrained, even when discussing the most lurid or sensational of topics, and he just empathy for his characters without giving pity or excuses for them, a fine line (no pun intended) for an author to walk. Most importantly, while his education in the great "underground" authors (from Fante to Bukowski to Burroughs to Selby to Carroll to Thompson) are evident, he never apes or rips of their style--he's developed a voice all his own.
While "Dirty Hits" is not his finest work, it's still an intriguing read, and shows that he has as much talent for the short story form as he does as a novelist or memoirist. His short prose often leads much more towards the surreal and fantastical, which sometimes works brilliantly and sometimes falls a bit flat (the fact that the collection of works in this book spans over a decade makes such variations in quality inevitable).
Quite simply, if you've enjoyed O'Neill's other works, (Sick City, Black Neon, Down and Out on Murder Mile, Digging the Vein, etc.) you'll enjoy this book as well.

Dirty Hits Stories 20032013 edition by Tony O'Neill Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Tony O'Neill is always brilliant. Spontaneous and unique and unafraid. I had a blast with this one. Loved every page of it.
not his best-but a few were good
Loved his writing style. Each story was as nuts as it was touching. I wish more were on unlimited.
these tales are medical marijuana for the soul. Skip that big mac combo today and score this eye-opening collection instead. Its way cheaper and better for you in a 'real deal holyfield' kinda way. Really, for 4 bones you can't go wrong...
Tony O'Neill does it again, and again, and again. He's a brilliant writer. The world is a better place because of his work. I'm so grateful for him.
Having lived in LA for some time now, I was given a dose of the dark side of this town. Still, it could be any town with marginal people leading desperate lives. Would not bring home to my mother or friends, but each character in their own way, was trying their best just to survive.
I so badly wanted to give a 5 star review. Mr. O'Neill's writing is stunning. This was my second purchase by him, having finished Digging the Vein the very same day.
But, for me, it was sadly mired down with so many typos and grammatical errors that it became a bit laborious to finish. Maybe, sadly, I'm old school, but when I pick up a book - good or bad - these two necessary qualities are expected and or assumed. Unfortunately, Mr. O'Neill's book can best be described by me with an analogy of spreading ketchup on tenderloin. His words are cheapened because they are so poorly edited.
